From: Michael - [KC9DSI] Sent: Sunday, March 16, 2008 Subject: AT&T U-verse vs ham radio RFI on HF bands (excerpts from original email) I am writing to you because of the problems I ( and I suspect MANY other hams will have ) with AT&T U-verse television and their computer package's being NOW sold in the Indianapolis IN area. I am a fairly new ham (4 years) on HF for 13 months. THE PROBLEM: My next door neighbor recently left Comcast Cable,(where their were no HF RFI ham problems) an signed up with AT&T U-verse, now according to him when ever I key my mic on HF (80 meters) it locks up his computer and television. He has AT&T service out a couple of times, where he was told the problem was the ham next door operating out of frequency and for him to call the FCC. I assured him my licensed station was compliant with the FCC and since he did not have the problem until he switched to AT&T the problem was with AT&T. I told him I would help any way I could. His response was that ham radio was obsolete, but when I mentioned about emergency and Katrina he told me with cell phones it still was not needed. With this kind of attitude among the general population and as new problems arise we need to be more concerned rather than saying " I am Legal the problem is yours". I installed a low pass filter on my station and made sure I was grounded properly, and in reports from the local and distant ham contacts, I have been told my station sounds very good, no problems detected. I am not a gifted engineer like you are BUT I do now how to pass out information and make referrals and can help the ham community that way. Need for RFI help???? Thank You Michael -KC9DSI PS; from -w9ih 1-Subsequent visits from other hams and one Ham from the ATT install section have verified KC9DSI station compliance with FCC rules.. 2-Local Ham friends of KC9DSI have installed RF chokes on the Neighbors ATT TELCO box and problems have been reduced to a very acceptable operation level for both KC9DSI & his Next door neighbor.!!! 3- ATT U-verse personnel don't seem to have the expertise or capability to install RF choke to there system.?!
